SEOUL (Central News Agency) - A union representing employees of Samsung Electronics' smartphone, TV, and home appliance divisions announced today that it plans to hold a rally on July 16 to protest the generous bonuses recently secured by the union for the chip division employees through labor negotiations.
According to Reuters, employees in the booming semiconductor division recently won a compensation agreement, spearheaded by another Samsung Electronics union.
Yonhap News Agency also reported that employees in the Device eXperience (DX) division, which covers smartphone, TV, and home appliance businesses, are expected to receive treasury stock incentives worth 6 million Korean won this year.
In comparison, employees in the semiconductor division are expected to receive performance bonuses of up to 600 million Korean won (approximately NT$12.59 million) this year.
The non-chip division union has approximately 28,000 members. Yonhap News Agency quoted the union as stating that an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 members are expected to participate in the rally to be held near Samsung Electronics' headquarters in Suwon.
Samsung Electronics is scheduled to announce its April-June financial results tomorrow, with operating profit expected to surge 18-fold compared to the same period last year. (Compiled by Hong Ki-won) 1150706
