(CNA, Taipei, July 6) China today test-fired a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead into the Pacific Ocean. In response, the Mainland Affairs Council stated that the PLA is escalating regional tensions and disrupting regional peace and stability.
China's previous test-fire of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific was in 2024, which was a land-based mobile ICBM. This time, it is a submarine-launched type with "second-strike" implications.
The Mainland Affairs Council responded in writing today that the PLA, by launching a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile, is deliberately demonstrating military power, escalating regional tensions, and disrupting regional peace and stability.
The Mainland Affairs Council concluded by stating that Taiwan will firmly defend national sovereignty, security, and regional peace and stability, and calls on the international community to pay attention to the CCP's military expansion and provocative threats.
Although China has not announced the model of the missile test-fired, external observers predict that China's test-fire this time should be the "JL-3" submarine-launched ballistic missile. (Editor: Chu Chien-ling) 1150706
