(CNA Taipei, 6th) According to a report by China's official media CCTV News, at 12:01 PM today, a strategic nuclear submarine of the PLA Navy successfully launched one strategic missile "carrying a training simulated warhead" into "relevant high seas in the Pacific Ocean," and it "accurately landed in the predetermined sea area." China claimed that this action "had been notified to relevant countries in advance."
Agence France-Presse reported earlier that the Papua New Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs and New Zealand government sources had previously confirmed that China was preparing to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead into the Pacific.
CCTV News reported that this missile test was a "routine arrangement of China's annual military training, which had been notified to relevant countries in advance, complies with international law and international practice, and is not directed at any specific country or target."
Agence France-Presse reported that when asked if he had received prior notification, Papua New Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko replied "Yes," and said that he himself had received a call from the Chinese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea.
A New Zealand government source also confirmed that China had notified New Zealand of the planned test-fire of an intercontinental ballistic missile. (Editor: Chiu Kuo-chiang / Chen Kai-yu) 1150706
