(Central News Agency, Washington, July 6, Comprehensive Foreign News) U.S. President Trump said he expects to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping around September 24, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly (General Assembly) held in New York.
Bloomberg News reported that Trump mentioned this date today when discussing the construction of the White House's new banquet hall, stating that Xi Jinping's potential visit was one of the reasons for building the new banquet hall.
Trump said, "For example, I think President Xi will be here at the end of September, around the 24th. We need a big banquet hall, the kind that can hold thousands of people. Everyone wants to see him."
If Xi Jinping visits Washington at that time, it will overlap with the high-level meetings of the United Nations General Assembly. Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 22 and usually stays in New York for several nights to hold talks with other world leaders.
Xi Jinping has only personally attended the UN General Assembly in New York once since taking office in 2012.
Trump had previously stated that he expected to host Xi Jinping in the U.S. in September, but did not disclose a possible specific date.
Trump and Xi Jinping met in Beijing in May this year, with both sides seeking to strengthen relations after tensions caused by the Iran war.
Despite actions by the world's two largest economies, the U.S. and China, to strengthen ties and make some progress in trade, they still have differences on multiple geopolitical issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Taiwan issue, and Trump's promotion of rebuilding tariff barriers.
