Fukushima Treated Water Key News

(Central News Agency, Taipei, July 6) The Atomic Energy Council stated that Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant today began its 21st batch of tritium-containing wastewater discharge operations, expecting to release 7,800 tons over 19 days, with an estimated total tritium radioactivity of approximately 1.3 trillion becquerels. Regarding the increased ratio of concentrations of radionuclides other than tritium to regulatory limits announced by TEPCO this year for multiple batches, the Atomic Energy Council responded that according to past data, due to different source tanks for each batch of discharged water, the values sometimes rise and fall, and are not continuously increasing.

The Atomic Energy Council stated in a press release today that Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced the analysis results of tritium-containing wastewater on the 2nd. The sum of the ratios of concentrations of radionuclides other than tritium to regulatory limits was 0.48, which meets the judgment value of less than 1. Furthermore, the analysis results from Kaken Co., Ltd., a third-party measurement laboratory commissioned by TEPCO, and the JAEA Okuma Analysis and Research Center, commissioned by the Japanese government, were both 0.45, consistent with TEPCO's analysis results.

According to previous press releases from the Atomic Energy Council, TEPCO announced the sum of the ratios of radionuclide concentrations to regulatory limits for different batches: 0.24 in January this year, 0.31 at the end of March, 0.45 at the end of May, and 0.48 on July 2nd.

Wang Ya-ling, head of the Environmental Section of the Radiation Protection Division of the Atomic Energy Council, explained in a telephone interview that since the first discharge of tritium-containing wastewater from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the sum of the ratios of concentrations of radionuclides other than tritium to regulatory limits has varied due to different source tanks for each batch of discharged water. Data from previous years shows that the ratio of concentrations of radionuclides other than tritium to regulatory limits has sometimes shown an upward trend and sometimes a downward trend; the values are not continuously increasing.

The Atomic Energy Council stated that the values for all batches currently meet the safety judgment value of less than 1, and also comply with the discharge implementation plan approved by Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) and TEPCO's annual discharge plan.

The Atomic Energy Council mentioned that it will continue to strictly monitor the source data of each batch of discharge from TEPCO through a cross-ministerial cooperation mechanism and will regularly publish Japan's discharge information on the "Marine Information Platform for Ocean Dispersion of Radioactive Materials." At the same time, it will conduct daily forecasts of ocean dispersion for the next 7 days, as well as radiation monitoring of seawater, marine life, coastal sand, and seabed mud.
