(CNA Taipei, July 7, 2024) China yesterday test-fired a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead into the Pacific Ocean. National Security Council Secretary-General Wu Chao-hsieh posted on social media platform X, stating that this is a provocation that undermines the stability of the Indo-Pacific region, and China has once again proven itself to be a regional bully.

Chinese state media CCTV News reported that at 12:01 PM yesterday, a Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy strategic nuclear submarine successfully launched a submarine-launched strategic missile "carrying a training simulated warhead" into "relevant waters of the Pacific Ocean's high seas," and it "accurately landed in the predetermined sea area." China also claimed that this action "was notified to relevant countries in advance."

Wu Chao-hsieh posted on social media platform X yesterday, stating that China had just test-fired a JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missile, which flew over the Philippines. This is a provocation to the Indo-Pacific region and undermines its stability, and China has once again proven itself to be a regional bully.

According to the image released by Wu Chao-hsieh, China launched the missile from the South China Sea. The missile's flight path flew over northern Luzon, Philippines, then over the South Pacific, and finally landed in the sea area between the Pacific island nations of Nauru and Tonga.
