(CNA Taipei, July 7) China has recently experienced frequent disasters caused by weather in multiple regions. In eastern Hubei, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and even tornadoes have resulted in 11 deaths. In Nanning City, Guangxi, a reservoir breach caused by heavy rainfall has led to 4 deaths. Additionally, affected by rainfall, 62 rivers across China have exceeded their alert water levels.
According to reports from CCTV News and other Chinese media, from July 6th to 7th, areas such as Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning in Hubei were hit by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with strong winds. 53 townships experienced thunderstorms with strong winds, with two townships experiencing winds reaching level 13. Some townships reported tornadoes. As of noon today, 14,600 people have been affected, 11 have died, 1 is missing, 331 are injured, 996 have been evacuated for safety, and 246 have been relocated. 22 houses have collapsed, and 4,855 houses have been damaged.
The report mentioned that the suddenness of this severe convective weather was extremely high, with strong short-term winds. After the disaster occurred, the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Hubei Provincial Government guided and urged relevant regions within the province to further improve prevention and control work and to prevent derivative disasters.
According to public information, China's national standard classifies wind force into 18 levels, with level 11 and 12 winds being rarely seen on land. When wind force exceeds level 12, it means "extremely destructive" to the land surface.
Additionally, Nanning City, Guangxi, held its second press conference on flood control and disaster relief on the morning of July 7th, reporting the latest situation regarding the reservoir breach caused by heavy rainfall and the resulting flood disaster.
According to the report, as of 11:00 AM on July 7th, the death toll in Hengzhou City has increased to 4, with 8 missing. Approximately 84,700 people have been affected, and 53,808 have been urgently relocated. Binyang County has affected 8,606 people, with over 8,000 urgently relocated.
The report pointed out that due to rainfall, from July 6th to 7th, 62 rivers, including the Guijiang River and its tributary Taohua River in Guangxi, the Bianhe River, a tributary of the Beijiang River in Guangdong, and the Zishui River and its tributary Liaoshui River in Hunan, have exceeded their alert water levels. Among them, the Qingshui River in Guangxi experienced its largest flood on record. Furthermore, the water levels at 4 monitoring stations in the Hangjiahu river network around Taihu Lake have also exceeded the alert line.
