(Central News Agency, reporter Cheng Wei-chen, Changhua, July 7) The Changhua County Health Bureau stated today that Tai Shan Company learned of issues with upstream supplier Chung Lien Oil's contaminated oil products on June 15 but failed to immediately report it to the health authorities. The Health Bureau has fined the company NT$6 million for violating the Act for the Prevention and Control of Foodborne Illness due to incomplete disclosure during inspections.

Chung Lien Oil Co., Ltd.'s oil products exceeded the cancer-causing substance benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) limits, with 291 metric tons shipped to Tai Shan Enterprise Co., Ltd.

The Health Bureau stated that at a quality assurance meeting held by Chung Lien Oil on June 15, Tai Shan Company was aware of information regarding problematic oil from the No. 315 salad oil tank manufactured by upstream supplier Chung Lien Oil on April 4 and shipped from April 8 to 9. However, they failed to immediately report this to the health authorities. Furthermore, during an inspection on July 1, Tai Shan Company did not provide a complete explanation of the discovery and handling process of the problematic oil. This violates the Food Safety and Sanitation Act, resulting in separate fines of NT$3 million.

The Food Safety and Sanitation Act stipulates that food businesses, upon discovering that a product poses a risk to health and safety, shall immediately and proactively cease manufacturing, processing, selling, and initiate recalls, and report to the county (city) competent authority. The county (city) competent authority, to ensure that food, food additives, food utensils, food containers or packaging, and food-use detergents comply with regulations, requires businesses to cooperate with relevant measures and not to evade, obstruct, or refuse.
