CNA's frontline reporting team delves into how the government and various industries are using AI to optimize production processes and drive green innovation, witnessing Taiwan's industries ascend once again.
TAIPEI, July 7 (CNA) -- The SEMI (formerly the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Park Service to jointly protect biodiversity for sustainability. Terry C.S. Gou, President of SEMI Taiwan and Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, stated that the signing will help the semiconductor industry align with national resources and goals, contributing positively to Taiwan's industrial development and environment through the collaboration of two "sacred mountains."
Director-General of the National Park Service, Wang Cheng-chi, and SEMI Taiwan President and Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Terry C.S. Gou, signed the "Nature Positive Taiwan: Building a Nature-Positive Future, Protecting Mountain, Sea, Climate Resilience, and Biodiversity Sustainability Partnership" Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, with Minister of the Interior Liu Shih-fang serving as witness.
Liu Shih-fang pointed out that Taiwan possesses two world-class assets to be proud of: the semiconductor industry and internationally recognized biodiversity hotspots. By connecting hundreds of semiconductor supply chains globally and in Taiwan, the National Park Service and SEMI will jointly establish three international models – "Government and Industry Protecting Nature," "Corporate Participation in Biodiversity Conservation," and "Global Technology Industry Supporting Nature-Positive Development" – through mechanisms such as scientific monitoring, natural carbon sinks, and ecological restoration, encouraging more businesses to engage in ecological conservation.
Terry C.S. Gou said that in addition to advanced manufacturing and AI-driven smart manufacturing, Taiwan's semiconductor companies have a unique competitive edge on the international stage in areas such as sustainability, green energy, and carbon reduction. Today's signing will help the semiconductor industry align with national resources and goals, making positive contributions to Taiwan's industrial development and environment through the collaboration of the two sacred mountains.
Terry C.S. Gou noted that SEMI has over 700 member companies in Taiwan and also serves international semiconductor companies. For example, companies like ASML and Micron are also seeking biodiversity and sustainability resources in Taiwan. SEMI also organizes conferences and forums related to green energy. A closed-door forum on sustainability will be held during the SEMICON Taiwan exhibition on September 1st, where they can share the achievements and resources of national parks with the international community.
The Ministry of the Interior explained that through this collaboration, companies will not only be able to participate in the conservation of Black-faced Spoonbills, coral reefs, and important habitats in the future, but also actively engage in the maintenance and enhancement of natural capital through employee volunteering, ecological experiences, environmental education, and support for indigenous-friendly products. Concurrently, SEMI's global network and international platform will be utilized to share Taiwan's achievements in nature conservation and sustainable governance with the world, enhancing Taiwan's international visibility and influence.
