One Piece Thousand Sunny Sails into Hualien's Liyu Lake; Typhoon May Delay Opening

(CNA, Hualien County, July 7) - The Hualien Fun Summer series of events, collaborating for the first time with the international anime "One Piece," is set to debut at Liyu Lake in Shoufeng Township. A giant inflatable "Thousand Sunny" measuring 12 meters high and 15 meters long has already been erected on the lake, drawing eager anticipation from fans and tourists.

Hualien County Government Tourism Department Director Yu Ming-hsun stated today that due to the potential strong winds and heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Bavi, the opening event originally scheduled for the 11th may be postponed. An announcement will be made later depending on weather conditions.

Yu Ming-hsun pointed out that this year's event design is highly creative. In addition to the Thousand Sunny positioned in the center of Liyu Lake, six classic One Piece characters, including Luffy, Chopper, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp, are scattered across various Hualien attractions. A 3-meter-tall Chopper will greet visitors at Liyu Lake, while others will appear at Dongdamen, the train station, and Zhikaxuan Water Park.

During the day, the Thousand Sunny can be photographed against the backdrop of the lake and mountains to capture magnificent beauty. At night, it will be combined with a water dance light show. On weekends, there will be additional parent-child interactive shows and starry sky fireworks, creating a summer adventure stage. During the event, participants can follow the stamp collection booklet to complete designated tasks and redeem limited edition One Piece themed gifts. There will also be opportunities to win prizes by taking photos on the Thousand Sunny.

This year's event specially offers visitors a "ship boarding experience." The ship's design is quite stable and can accommodate up to 6 people at a time (e.g., a whole family boarding together). Each group can board for 3 minutes of photos. However, to get the qualification for boarding and taking photos on the Thousand Sunny, visitors must first experience and rent a swan boat from a local boat operator at Liyu Lake. After rowing around the lake, they will obtain the qualification to board and take photos. This is expected to provide a strong boost to the local tourism industry around Liyu Lake.

Due to the complexity of setting up the Thousand Sunny, deflation and re-inflation are major undertakings. Furthermore, with Typhoon Bavi approaching, safety measures require preemptive action. The team will deflate and remove the Thousand Sunny before the opening, and windproof safety measures such as the rear truss will also be dismantled.

Yu Ming-hsun said that the opening event originally scheduled for the 11th may be adjusted or postponed. After the typhoon passes and the weather and valley air currents stabilize, the ship will be re-erected, and the official opening time will be announced. (Editor: Chen Jen-hua) 1150707
