(CNA Washington, July 8, Comprehensive Foreign News) After Iran was recently accused of attacking several energy transport vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Department of the Treasury today revoked a temporary exemption from oil sanctions on Iran, condemning Tehran's actions as "completely unacceptable."

"Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz are completely unacceptable to the U.S. and will face consequences," a U.S. official told Agence France-Presse.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced in June a temporary exemption from oil sanctions on Iran, which would allow Iran to produce, sell, and transport crude oil and related products until August 21.

According to maritime monitoring agencies and Qatar, a total of three oil tankers, including one Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker, were attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar, one of the mediators in U.S.-Iran peace talks, condemned Iran's attack as "unacceptable."

The U.S. official stated that the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding is "entirely based on performance," indicating that Iran would only receive related benefits if Tehran demonstrated "good behavior."

"Our negotiators remain committed to reaching a final agreement in good faith," the official emphasized. (Compiled by Hung Chi-yuan) 1150708
