(Central News Agency, Pan Xin-tong, Lienchiang County, July 7) Matsu is surrounded by the sea, and many people go to the beach to play in the water every summer. The Lienchiang County Water Lifesaving Association pointed out that Matsu's waters have large tidal differences, strong currents in some areas, and no permanent lifeguards. They urge the public not to swim alone to ensure their safety.
Chen Yu-lin, Secretary-General of the Lienchiang County Water Lifesaving Association, told CNA that to promote water safety education and raise awareness of correct marine recreation concepts, three water recreation and safety education promotion events will be held during the peak summer vacation period for beachgoers. The association has also invited the Southern District Watercraft Team from Taiwan to Matsu, allowing local residents to experience recreational facilities such as kayaks and personal watercraft.
Chen Yu-lin said that the promotion activities not only allow local children to experience recreational facilities like personal watercraft and banana boats, which are rarely accessible, but more importantly, they cultivate water safety awareness from a young age and teach them how to approach the ocean. Seeing the children go from fear to bravely entering the water fills him and his colleagues with a sense of accomplishment.
However, Chen Yu-lin also admitted that the members of the Water Lifesaving Association all have full-time jobs and organize promotional activities during their leisure time. Due to funding limitations, the number of events that can be held each year is extremely limited, and they hope for more human and financial resources.
Data from the Lienchiang County Water Lifesaving Association indicates that Matsu is located at the mouth of China's Min River. Its coastline is characterized by large tidal differences and strong currents in some sea areas. Coupled with its border location and the absence of permanent lifeguards, it is recommended that the public pay attention to tidal and current information before entering the water for recreational activities. Swimming alone is strictly prohibited to maintain personal safety. (Editor: Long Bai-an) 1150707
