Taipei, Jul. 8 (CNA) Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng stated today that the submarine-launched missile recently fired by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) into the Pacific Ocean was a JL-2 type. The Republic of China Armed Forces fully monitored the event through joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and multiple intelligence sources. He also condemned the CCP's action as disruptive to regional stability, proving itself to be a "troublemaker," and Taiwan will closely monitor the situation with its allies.
According to a report by Chinese state media CCTV News, at 12:01 p.m. on July 6, a strategic nuclear submarine of the People's Liberation Army Navy successfully launched a submarine-launched strategic missile equipped with a "training simulated warhead" into "relevant waters of the Pacific high seas," which "accurately landed in the designated sea area."
The Legislative Yuan's Foreign and National Defense Committee invited Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng to deliver a special report on "Human Resources Policies and Responses of the Armed Forces Under the Impact of Low Birth Rate" this morning and to answer questions.
When questioned by the media before the meeting about the type of submarine-launched missile and its launch location, Chiu stated before the interview that the model was JL-2. The Ministry of National Defense had fully monitored it through joint ISR and multiple intelligence sources. Various countries have condemned the CCP for this action, which disrupts regional stability and proves the CCP itself is indeed a troublemaker. Taiwan will continue to closely monitor the situation with its allied nations.
Regarding whether the CCP aircraft carrier Fujian was conducting regional exercises near the Paracel Islands and the movements of the aircraft carrier Liaoning, Chiu stated that the Fujian should be evading a typhoon and will return to its home port afterward. The Liaoning has already passed the Miyako Strait area and will conduct carrier-based aircraft training.
Concerning the effectiveness of the Sky Bow and Sky Spear exercises held in Pingtung yesterday, Chiu indicated that they were executed according to plan and achieved good results.
Regarding the issue of carcinogenic oil, Chiu emphasized that food safety has always been a primary concern for the Armed Forces. All oil products were immediately removed from shelves, and the Armed Forces will send all oil products for testing to ensure food safety. (Edited by Su Lung-chi) 1150708
