(Central News Agency, Reporter Wu Che-hao, Changhua, July 8) Chung Lien soybean salad oil was found to exceed the limit for the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene, with a total of 1,300 tons flowing to Tai Shan, Fu Shou, and Fu Mao. The Changhua County Department of Health stated that it received a report from Tai Shan and approved its destruction plan. Destruction of approximately 10 tons of recovered and stored salad oil began this afternoon, and it will be converted into biodiesel.
Chung Lien's "Soybean Salad Oil" exceeded the limit for the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene, with a total of 1,300 tons flowing to Tai Shan, Fu Shou, and Fu Mao. 18 affected products, totaling 30 batches, were distributed to 360 businesses. Tai Shan Company also voluntarily reported last night that one batch of cooking oil detected 2.5 ppb of benzo(a)pyrene, exceeding the limit.
The Changhua County Department of Health issued a press release today explaining that it will fully monitor the company's destruction operations. After confirming the quantities are correct, special vehicles will be dispatched to transport the oil to a legal recycling facility for final conversion into biodiesel, preventing the contaminated oil from re-entering the market. This process is expected to be completed within 7 working days. Subsequent oil recalls will follow the same destruction procedures to ensure all problematic products are removed from the food supply chain.
The Department of Health stated that Tai Shan Company has submitted a voluntary destruction plan in accordance with the law. The products to be destroyed include the contaminated soybean salad oil shipped by Chung Lien Oils to Tai Shan Company, as well as blended oil products made using this raw material, with a total weight of approximately 10 tons.
Regarding the contaminated oil entering the market, the Taiwan Changhua District Prosecutors Office stated that it has requested the Changhua County Department of Health to continue its investigations and compile relevant information. If there is suspicion of criminal offenses, cases will be immediately opened. (Editor: Huang Ming-hsi) 1150708
