Key News on the Iran-U.S. War

(CNA Najaf, July 8 - Reuters) Mourners today followed the coffin of the assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei as it paraded through the Iraqi holy city of Najaf. The six-day funeral ceremony, which previously drew large crowds within Iran, continues across the border.

According to Reuters, crowds holding large portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gathered along the funeral route. As the truck carrying the coffin passed, the crowd chanted slogans such as "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."

Flags of Iraq and Iran fluttered above the crowd, interspersed with flags of powerful Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups whose supporters also joined the procession.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also arrived to participate in the funeral procession.

Najaf holds special significance for Shiite Muslims worldwide as the resting place of Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammad.

Khamenei's coffin arrived at Najaf International Airport last night, where Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, senior officials, and religious figures participated in the reception ceremony.

The funeral procession is expected to continue to the Iraqi holy city of Karbala, after which the coffin will be returned to Iran for burial. (Intern Translator: Zhuo You-an / Editor: Yang Zhao-yan) 1150708
