International Dragon Boat Federation Returns to Hong Kong, to Host World Championships in 2027

(CNA, reporter Chang Chien, Hong Kong, July 8) The Hong Kong Investment Promotion Agency announced today that the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) headquarters will relocate from London to Hong Kong, and is scheduled to host the World Dragon Boat Championships in Hong Kong next year.

According to the announcement, the IDBF's global headquarters in Hong Kong has commenced operations. The choice of Hong Kong as its global headquarters is primarily based on historical ties and practical business advantages.

IDBF President Claudio Schermi stated that the federation was established in Hong Kong 35 years ago, and its return is "like bringing the dragon boat home." To demonstrate its commitment to long-term development in Hong Kong, the organization will recruit full-time staff locally and leverage local professional talent to expand the influence of dragon boat sports globally, attracting international community participation.

The Investment Promotion Agency indicated that the IDBF is scheduled to host the World Dragon Boat Championships in Hong Kong next year. This will be the first time Hong Kong hosts this event since 1997, and it is expected to attract over 5,000 athletes from around the world, bringing considerable economic, tourism, and sports benefits to Hong Kong.

The IDBF has approximately 80 member associations worldwide. Its relocation back to Hong Kong solidifies the city's position as a global hub for this traditional sport and symbolizes a significant step for the IDBF in its long-term goal of having dragon boat racing included as an Olympic sport.

Online information shows that the IDBF is an international dragon boat sports organization founded in Hong Kong in 1991 by representatives from various countries and regions, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States.
