(Central News Agency, Tokyo, July 8 - By Dai Yazhen) The Japan Association for the Promotion of International Trade (JAPIT), Japan's economic and trade window to China, is reportedly organizing a delegation to visit China in late September. This trip was originally planned for June but was postponed due to the passing of its chairman, former House of Representatives Speaker Yohei Kono.
According to Kyodo News, several sources familiar with the matter revealed today that the successor to Yohei Kono is expected to be former Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. JAPIT is expected to officially nominate Iwaya as chairman by July, after completing its internal procedures.
Sino-Japanese relations have been in a slump recently. Since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's response in the Diet regarding "Taiwan contingency" last November, relations between the two countries have cooled significantly. Not only has government-level dialogue been hindered, but economic and cultural exchanges have also stagnated.
The outside world is watching to see if the JAPIT delegation's visit to China, if successful, can become an opportunity for Japan and China to restart dialogue and mend relations. (Editor: Wei Shu) 1150708
