(CNA Vancouver, July 7, International News) Switzerland and Colombia played to a scoreless draw after 120 minutes in the World Cup Round of 16 today, ultimately winning the penalty shootout 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will compete with defending champions Argentina for a spot in the semifinals.

According to Agence France-Presse, in the penalty shootout, Colombia's Davinson Sanchez's shot hit the crossbar, while Switzerland's Manuel Akanji missed his shot, bringing both sides back to square one.

Subsequently, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a brilliant save on Cucho Hernandez's penalty kick, giving Switzerland the lead again.

Both sides then scored two goals each, with Ruben Vargas finally converting the decisive penalty kick steadily, leading Switzerland into the quarterfinals.

This is Switzerland's first time reaching the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting the World Cup in 1954.

This match was the final Round of 16 game held in Vancouver, Canada, and the last match of the 2026 World Cup to be held outside the United States.
