(CNA London, July 8th, International News) British player Arthur Fery, participating in this Wimbledon Championships on a wildcard, continued his stunning performance today, sweeping past French Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli in straight sets in the quarterfinals to advance to the men's singles semifinals.
According to Agence France-Presse, Fery, currently ranked World No. 114, defeated the tournament's No. 9 seed, Italian ace Cobolli, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 in the quarterfinals today. He becomes the first player since Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia in 2001 to reach the Wimbledon men's singles semifinals on a wildcard.
Furthermore, Fery is just two victories away from potentially following in Ivanisevic's footsteps to win the title, and could become the first British player to win the Wimbledon men's singles title since Andy Murray in 2016.
After the match, he said amidst the enthusiastic cheers of the home crowd on Centre Court, "I'm getting better with every match, it's truly incredible, I can't believe it."
Additionally, Fery is the third-lowest ranked player to reach the Wimbledon men's singles semifinals since 1985. The two players ranked lower were Vladimir Voltchkov, ranked World No. 237 in 2000, and Goran Ivanisevic, ranked World No. 125 in 2001.
In another men's singles quarterfinal match that concluded almost simultaneously, German star and tournament's No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev secured a victory. He defeated American ace Taylor Fritz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Zverev had been eliminated in the round of 16 in his previous nine appearances at this grass-court event. He has now written a new chapter at the All England Club and is seeking his second Grand Slam title after the French Open this year.
He stated after the match, "Finally being able to play well at Wimbledon is a dream come true for me, I've waited a long time."
The 29-year-old Zverev will face Fery on July 10th. The winner will compete against the victor of the match between defending champion and World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Serbian star Novak Djokovic for the championship title. (Compiled by Yang Wei-ching) 1150709
