(CNA Taipei, July 8) - Taiwanese-American player Stuart Fairchild has transferred to the Seattle Mariners organization. Today, he joined the Rookie League within the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) system to find his rhythm, immediately hitting a 3-run homer. He went 1-for-3 with the homer and was substituted out in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Fairchild, 30, nicknamed "Fei Zai," was recently designated for assignment (DFA) by the MLB's Cleveland Guardians. After his DFA period expired, he refused a minor league assignment and became a free agent. Yesterday, he finalized his move to the Mariners. According to MLB.com transactions, the two sides signed a minor league contract, and he was assigned to the Rookie League.
In today's game against the Chicago White Sox Rookie League team, Fairchild started as the cleanup hitter and center fielder. In his first at-bat in the top of the 1st, he hit into a double play. In the top of the 3rd, he grounded out to the shortstop. In the top of the 5th, after his teammate hit a solo home run, Fairchild came up with runners on first and second and hit a home run to left field, driving in 3 runs and giving his team a 4-3 lead. The Mariners' Rookie League team scored 5 runs in that inning.
Fairchild was replaced defensively in the bottom of the 5th. In this game, he went 1-for-3 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs. This year, he hit 5 home runs in 3A for the Guardians, and in MLB, he had 3 hits in 14 games without a homer. His last MLB appearance was on June 25th, Taiwan time. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150708
