(CNA, Keelung, July 8) With Typhoon Bavi approaching, Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang inspected flood control preparations at the East Pier 4 pumping station today, urging the team to implement all typhoon prevention measures to minimize damage. Thirty-two yachts at the Badouzi marina are scheduled to be lifted ashore today for typhoon protection.

Hsieh stated that typhoon disaster prevention work requires proactive deployment, and the city government has instructed all departments to complete flood control preparations. He emphasized the need for thorough inspections and readiness for pumping stations, storm drains, regional drainage systems, and flood-prone hotspots, while closely monitoring the typhoon's latest movements to activate emergency response mechanisms at any time.

The Keelung City Public Works Department indicated that to enhance overall flood control capacity, maintenance has been completed on six city-managed regional drainage rivers, including Dawulun Creek, covering a total length of 38.58 kilometers with 732 cubic meters of silt removed. Silt removal of 11,948 meters and weeding of 4,800 meters have been carried out in storm drains and culverts throughout the city to ensure smooth drainage.

Regarding pumping facilities, the Public Works Department reported that inspections have been completed for 16 pumping stations along the Keelung River, including Dudong, and seven pumping stations in the urban area, including East Pier 4, all of which are operating normally. The city government has prepared six large mobile pumping units, two of which have been deployed at the Wuling Street intersection of Dawulun Creek and East Pier 4, ready to pump water based on water level changes.

Furthermore, last October, strong waves caused by the northeast monsoon and a typhoon breached the breakwater at the Badouzi marina, resulting in three sunken vessels and one semi-submerged. Boat owner Wang Ming-hsiang noted that boat owners are very concerned about the arrival of Typhoon Bavi and plan to lift 32 yachts ashore today. The operator, Argo Company, will provide space for the yachts. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150708
