(CNA) Taipei, July 9 - Yaita Akio, CEO of the Indo-Pacific Strategy Think Tank, was attacked by a Hong Kong national surnamed Liao. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated today that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can also find local collaborators in Taiwan to carry out violent intimidation against Taiwanese people; the current review mechanism for Hong Kong and Macau residents entering Taiwan will be further examined.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) held its regular press conference this afternoon, hosted by Deputy Minister and Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh.
The case of Yaita Akio being attacked by a Hong Kong national surnamed Liao has sparked public discussion about the current review mechanism for Hong Kong and Macau residents entering Taiwan.
Liang Wen-chieh responded that the current review mechanism for Hong Kong and Macau residents entering Taiwan will be further examined. However, he emphasized that if the CCP wishes to carry out violent intimidation against Taiwanese people, it can also find local Taiwanese individuals to do so. The CCP has a wide range of potential targets and is not limited to Hong Kong and Macau residents. The most important thing is to arrest the perpetrators as quickly as possible.
Liang Wen-chieh mentioned that Taiwan and Hong Kong do not have an exchange of criminal record databases. When reviewing applications from Hong Kong nationals to enter Taiwan, it is not possible to confirm whether the applicant has a criminal record. At most, filtering and judgment can be made based on public reports.
He stressed that the CCP can arbitrarily send someone to carry out violent intimidation against Taiwanese people, so energy should not be focused on this aspect. The most important thing is to make perpetrators of cross-border suppression pay the price. Taiwan's current laws are indeed insufficient to impose sufficient punishment on the perpetrators, and this is the key point. (Editor: Lu Chia-jung) 1150709
