(CNA, reporter Yeh Chen, Taoyuan, July 9) As Typhoon Bavi approaches, the Northern Region Water Resources Branch of the Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs, stated today that considering the current high water level of Shihmen Reservoir, to increase flood control operational flexibility and reduce the risk of downstream flooding, the reservoir began adjusting its discharge through the sediment flushing tunnel at 9 AM today, reserving flood control capacity.
The Northern Branch stated that according to meteorological data, the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rains to northern Taiwan starting tomorrow. All facilities of Shihmen Reservoir have undergone safety inspections, flood control equipment has been prepared, and typhoon response measures are in place. Coordination with water supply units under its jurisdiction has also been completed to ensure the stable operation of the water supply system during the typhoon.
The Northern Branch also mentioned that to cope with the potential rapid increase in raw water turbidity caused by heavy rains, the Zhongzhuang Adjustment Pond has been pre-filled to mitigate the impact of potential turbidity increases on domestic water supply. Trash racks at all water intakes have been cleaned to maintain normal operation of water intake facilities. The three mud-removal vessels within the reservoir have been evacuated to safe waters in advance to avoid the storm damage from the storm. (Editor: Liang Chun-di) 1150709
