(CNA, Yilan County, July 9) With Typhoon Bavi approaching, President Lai Ching-te visited the Army Lanyang Area Command today and instructed the military to actively assist local disaster prevention efforts, stating that the military's mission is to protect the people.
President Lai visited the Army Lanyang Area Command in Sanxing Township, Yilan County this morning to inspect the military's typhoon preparedness and understand the communication and engineering facilities required for disaster prevention and relief.
In his speech, President Lai said that Typhoon Bavi is approaching with great force and is expected to bring heavy rainfall. The Executive Yuan has already activated the disaster prevention and response mode. The purpose and core spirit of building the military is to protect the lives and property of the people. This applies to facing challenges from hostile forces as well as facing natural disasters. Therefore, the military must stand with the people, protect them, and minimize the impact of natural disasters.
President Lai pointed out that he hopes the military, in addition to preparing for disaster prevention, will also pre-deploy forces to areas prone to flooding or areas where disasters are likely to occur. They should cooperate with local governments and stand with the people to protect them. Furthermore, the military should actively participate in subsequent reconstruction efforts to help disaster-stricken residents quickly resume normal life.
President Lai said that in response to the approaching Typhoon Bavi, the Lanyang Area Command has completed its organizational structure and has pre-positioned forces and equipment based on Yilan's flood-prone areas, which is commendable. He thanked the Army's 3rd Operations Command for their efforts last year during Typhoon Feng凰, which helped local governments with disaster relief and recovery, minimizing damage to the public.
President Lai stated that Taiwanese society has expectations for the national army and strongly supports it. Last year, during the dammed lake incident at the Ma Tai An River in Hualien, in addition to hundreds of thousands of "shovel heroes" involved in the rescue, the most important source of strength was the national army, fully demonstrating the spirit of "the military loves the people, the military stands with the people." This spirit should be carried forward. (Editor: Guan Zhongwei) 1150709
