(Central News Agency, Matsu County, July 9) Affected by the approaching Typhoon Bavi, the Lienchiang County Government's Department of Transportation and Tourism announced this evening that island transportation services between Nangan and Beigan, and between Nangan and Juguang will be suspended starting tomorrow noon. Island transportation services between Dongyin and Dajiu, as well as the two-Matsu small three-통 (cross-strait ferry service), will be suspended all day.

The Lienchiang County Government held a typhoon Bavi disaster prevention meeting this afternoon, with various units reporting on their disaster preparedness. The Department of Transportation and Tourism pointed out that there are approximately 187 tour group tourists from Taiwan stranded in Matsu due to Typhoon Bavi, and 90 tourists on the small three-통. They will continue to care for the tourists in conjunction with the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration. For individual travelers, they will continue to work with民宿 (bed and breakfast) and hotel operators to ensure their safety.

The Nangan Township Office stated that a total of 136 teachers, students, and parents from schools on Taiwan main island, who are participating in the first Nangan Township Mayor's Cup Basketball Tournament, are stranded due to Typhoon Bavi. After the typhoon ends, they will coordinate with relevant units to arrange for the teachers and students to return to Taiwan as soon as possible.

The Lienchiang County Government's Department of Transportation and Tourism announced this evening that on July 10, island transportation services will be suspended as follows: Nangan to Beigan services after 12:00 PM; Nangan to Juguang 2:00 PM service will be suspended. Services between Nangan and Dongyin, Nangan and Dajiu, and Dongju and Xiju will be suspended all day.

The Fire Department explained that Typhoon Bavi is approaching with great force, and its path and intensity are similar to Typhoon Maria in 2018, which caused damage to houses and signs in many areas of the county. They urge the public to be aware of rainwater and seawater flooding into their homes, to secure signs and other items, and to refrain from watching waves or fishing by the sea. All departments should also review whether their typhoon preparedness personnel and equipment are sufficient to respond promptly in the event of a disaster.

Taipower's Matsu Service Area stated that they have fully activated typhoon preparedness operations today and have strengthened inspections of power supply equipment and conducted preventive tree trimming to reduce the damage to lines caused by sudden strong winds.

The meeting moderator, Lienchiang County Magistrate Wang Chung-ming, pointed out that Typhoon Bavi is powerful and all departments must not be complacent. They should use village broadcasts and other means to remind the public to prepare for the typhoon and minimize its impact. As for stranded tourists, the Department of Transportation and Tourism should accurately ascertain their numbers to facilitate the activation of evacuation plans at any time after the disaster.
