Taipei, July 9 (CNA) With the strong typhoon Bavi's maritime warning already issued, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated today that the decision on whether to suspend work and classes for the following day will generally be announced at 8 PM, with the principle of a full-day suspension. He also urged the public to avoid unnecessary outings tomorrow and on the 11th, and to stay home as much as possible.

Chiang Wan-an inspected a sedimentation tank on Section 5, Xinyi Road, Xinyi District this afternoon. Speaking to reporters before the event, he said that in principle, following usual practice, discussions will be held with the four cities of Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan. After considering the typhoon's trajectory and estimated rainfall and wind, the decision on whether to suspend work and classes for the following day will be announced at 8 PM. He reiterated that if work and classes are suspended, it will definitely be on a full-day basis.

Chiang Wan-an said that the current forecast from the meteorological team indicates that the impact of Typhoon Bavi will begin on the evening of the 10th, and it is likely to cause severe damage. Therefore, the city government team is on high alert. He has arranged to inspect various preparedness efforts in Wenshan, Xinyi, Songshan, and Neihu districts. He also urged the public to prepare for the typhoon early and to avoid unnecessary outings tomorrow and on the 11th, staying home as much as possible.

Furthermore, Chiang Wan-an's remarks to district offices yesterday during a typhoon Bavi disaster preparedness meeting, stating "do not let me see any situations that require emergency dispatch at that time," have sparked discussion.

Chiang Wan-an said today that preparations that can be made in advance should be done well, thoroughly, and effectively, rather than being dealt with at the last minute. This is the responsibility and requirement of a decision-maker. He acknowledged that all units have been working hard these past few days and expressed hope to minimize the impact of this typhoon on Taipei City and to fully advance post-disaster recovery efforts.

When asked by reporters if his remarks were interpreted as wielding authority, Chiang Wan-an stated that he was asking all units to make the worst-case plans and to prepare in the most rigorous and serious manner, including clearing ditches, protecting slopes, pre-positioning water pumps, and dispatching sandbags for public collection in advance to ensure thorough preparation.
