NTNU Advances to Samsung Junior High for Camp, Guiding Students to Identify Online Information

The Graduate Institute of Mass Communication at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has launched a media literacy camp at Samsung Junior High School in Yilan, starting today. Through scenario simulations, case studies, and interactive teaching, the camp aims to help students identify the authenticity of online information and strengthen their ability to respond to online scams and cyberbullying.

The '2026 NTNU Media Literacy Camp – Star Media, Wise Thinking' is being held from July 13 to 15 at Samsung Junior High. NTNU Distinguished Professor Chen Bing-Hong stated that Taiwanese people spend over four hours daily online. In today's digital era, the camp aims to help students understand the importance of digital privacy, develop healthy online habits, and enhance their ability to protect personal data and recognize digital risks.

Camp director and second-year master's student Chen Hong-Zhi noted that preliminary surveys revealed middle school students heavily rely on social media and short-video platforms, yet their ability to identify algorithm-driven content, online scams, and cyberbullying remains underdeveloped. The curriculum guides students in recognizing misinformation, understanding algorithmic influence on information exposure, and cultivating essential media literacy for the digital age.

Lin Tsung-Yu, Academic Affairs Director at Samsung Junior High, shared in an interview that while students used to stay after school for sports, it is now common to see them gathering in classrooms, scrolling through short videos or playing online games. He expressed hope that the camp will help students become more mindful of personal data online and improve their ability to assess digital information, fostering safe and responsible internet usage.
