(Central News Agency reporter Tseng Yun-ting, Taipei, 13th) To enhance the convenience of trademark applications, the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) announced today the addition of an 'Automatic Product and Service Name Recommendation' feature to its trademark search system. Applicants can now input desired product or service names and receive up to 20 recommended results per query, helping reduce the likelihood of corrections due to non-compliant naming, thereby saving time and costs.

TIPO explained in a press release that the product or service names specified in trademark applications are not only crucial for defining the scope of trademark rights but also serve as a key basis for examination. In the past, applicants often had to make corrections due to overly broad terms, unclear descriptions, or incorrect classification of goods and services—leading to increased administrative procedures and longer examination timelines.

To improve application convenience, TIPO has not only continued to provide a search function based on its 'Classification of Goods and Services and Cross-Reference Materials' but has now further introduced the intelligent 'Automatic Product and Service Name Recommendation' feature.

According to TIPO, once applicants enter a product or service name, the intelligent recommendation mechanism instantly provides names that match official announcements and have reference value from prior examination cases. This helps applicants quickly identify suitable product or service names for use in their trademark applications.

The feature delivers up to 20 recommendations per search, categorized by data type into three groups: 'Announced', 'Reference', and 'Not Allowed'. 'Announced' refers to names officially listed in TIPO’s 'Classification of Goods and Services and Cross-Reference Materials'. Applications using only these names in electronic filings qualify for fee reductions and fast-track examination.

'Reference' names are deemed useful and may be specified, but do not qualify for fee reductions or fast-track review. 'Not Allowed' includes names officially designated as too broad or ambiguous, which applicants should avoid. TIPO stated that with this classification and intelligent recommendation, applicants can instantly understand the applicability of each name, reducing the risk of corrections due to inappropriate designation and improving overall efficiency while lowering administrative costs.

TIPO emphasized that advancing intelligent trademark services is a key step in enhancing intellectual property services. Going forward, TIPO will continue optimizing the trademark search system and integrate this feature into its online trademark application system. By combining AI and digital technologies with user needs, TIPO aims to build a smarter, more user-friendly, and efficient intellectual property service environment.

TIPO reminded applicants that the 'Automatic Product and Service Name Recommendation' function is only an auxiliary tool. Applicants must still carefully select appropriate names based on the actual goods or services associated with their trademarks and ensure that application content aligns with their intended use plans to protect their trademark rights.
