Man Steals Aluminum Windows During Typhoon, Arrested by New Taipei Police Within 30 Minutes; Drug-Impaired Driving Also Uncovered

According to Central News Agency, on August 11 during the approach of Typhoon Bavi, a residential burglary occurred in Xindian District, New Taipei City, where aluminum windows were stolen. The Qingtan Police Substation of the New Taipei City Police Department responded immediately, reviewing surveillance footage to identify the suspect’s characteristics, the involved vehicle, and the escape route.

Just 30 minutes after the incident, police spotted the suspect, identified as Mr. Cheng, driving the suspect vehicle at 17.6 kilometers along Section 3 of Beiyi Road. When officers signaled for him to stop, Cheng accelerated and attempted to flee, colliding with a mountainside before stopping by the roadside. Police quickly apprehended him and seized tools used in the crime, including a screwdriver and gloves, at the scene.

During the interception, officers observed that Cheng appeared nervous, spoke incoherently, and exhibited signs of sluggishness. A saliva test confirmed the presence of ketamine, indicating drug-impaired driving. As a result, the vehicle was impounded, and Cheng was charged under Taiwan’s Criminal Code for theft and endangering public safety due to drug use while driving. The case has been transferred to the Taiwan Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.

The Xindian Police Division warned residents to remain vigilant during natural disasters, as criminals may exploit the chaos to commit offenses.
