Central News Agency Report
(CNA reporter Hsieh Ching-wen, Taipei, July 13) Taiwanese pitcher Pan Wen-Hui of the Philadelphia Phillies organization has a tattoo on his neck that reads 'Persevere'—a constant reminder of his long rehabilitation journey. Today, he took the mound in the MLB Futures Game, pitching 0.1 innings, giving up a home run, and reaching 159 km/h. Making his first appearance at the Phillies' home stadium, he expressed excitement.
The 23-year-old pitcher Pan Wen-Hui has been selected for the Major League Baseball (MLB) Futures Game, becoming the 15th Taiwanese player in history to do so. This season, his highest level has been Double-A, where he has made 8 relief appearances, pitching 8 innings with 3 earned runs allowed, 1 hold, and 1 save, posting a 3.38 ERA.
The MLB Futures Game was held today at Citizens Bank Park, the home stadium of the Philadelphia Phillies. After five innings, the American League team led the National League team 2-1. In the top of the 6th inning with two outs, the National League brought in Pan Wen-Hui as a reliever.
Pan faced his first batter, Walker Jenkins, and issued a walk. He then gave up a two-run home run to Nathan Flewelling. However, he quickly regained composure and struck out Xavier Neyens to complete his outing. In total, he pitched 0.1 innings, allowed one home run, and two earned runs. The National League ultimately lost 6-1, and Pan was credited with no decision.
U.S. media highlighted Pan's appearance in the game, specifically noting the word 'Persevere' tattooed on his neck. Pan explained that after undergoing multiple surgeries, including Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament replacement), the tattoo serves as a daily reminder of his goals throughout his long recovery process.
Making his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park, Pan said, 'I'm really excited. The result wasn't perfect, but I'm happy to have had the chance to be here.' (Edited by Kuan Chung-wei) 1150713
