Typhoon Bavi Causes Landslides in Miaoli, Three Roads Blocked; Repair Work Aims for Reopening by 14th

(Central News Agency reporter Lu Gang-jun, Miaoli County, August 13) The Miaoli County Government announced that landslides have blocked three major roads: a slope collapse at 10.2 km on Miaoli Line 22, multiple landslides and mudflows along Miaoli Line 21, and several collapses along Miaoli Line 62. Emergency repair work is underway, with temporary access expected by August 13 and full reopening targeted for August 14.

The Miaoli County Government released a press statement indicating that the Central Disaster Response Center held a post-typhoon video conference this morning regarding Typhoon Bavi. Representatives from the Fire Bureau, Civil Affairs Department, and Transportation and Public Works Department attended on behalf of Miaoli County, along with disaster response centers from Tai’an Township and Nanzhuang Township, which reported on recovery progress.

The county government reported that Typhoon Bavi caused multiple road disruptions in Miaoli. On August 13, Nanzhuang’s Donghe Village suspended work and classes, and all 310 evacuated residents have safely returned home. A total of 57 road repair sites have been addressed, with 46 completed and 11 still under repair.

Due to road collapses, cable lines for wired television were severed, leaving some areas in Shitan Township, Tai’an Township, and Dahu Township without TV service. Service providers are on standby and will begin repairs once roads are accessible.

During the video conference, the Miaoli County Disaster Prevention Office reported that the 10.2 km section of Miaoli Line 22 is impassable in both directions due to a slope collapse. The section of Miaoli Line 21 from Shihbi Bridge to Xianxian Valley experienced multiple landslides and mudflows, rendering it impassable. Similarly, Miaoli Line 62 from Jinggua Bridge to Taian Guanzhi has multiple collapses and remains closed. Temporary access is expected by August 13, with full reopening planned for August 14.

The Nanzhuang Township Emergency Response Center reported that the landslides along Miaoli Line 21 have cut off transportation, leaving Donghe Village isolated as an 'island.' Currently, 12 residents in the Luhu community remain cut off from the outside. Their conditions are stable, but emergency supplies must be airdropped.

According to the press release, Fire Agency Director Hsiao Huan-chang instructed the Miaoli County Government to ensure the safety of the trapped residents in Donghe Village.
