In the Asian U18 Men's Volleyball Championship held in China, Taiwan demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure, defeating Indonesia 32-30, 25-16, 26-24 to secure their second consecutive win in the preliminary round and advance to the quarterfinals.
Taiwan was grouped with China, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. After a hard-fought five-set victory over Hong Kong yesterday, Taiwan defeated Indonesia 3-0 today, securing two wins and guaranteeing a top-eight finish. Tomorrow, they will face host nation China for the group title.
In the first set, Taiwan initially struggled with unforced errors but regained composure at a critical moment. Chen Kunlin and Wang Yu-Zhe blocked consecutive powerful spikes from Indonesia, boosting team morale and helping Taiwan win 32-30. In the second set, Taiwan maintained momentum, dominating in serving, blocking, and attacking to win 25-16 and take a commanding lead.
In the decisive third set, despite Indonesia adjusting their tactics to disrupt Taiwan’s offense, Taiwan stayed close through coordinated wing attacks and quick sets. Middle blocker Wang Yu-Zhe delivered two crucial ace serves at key moments, energizing the team. Taiwan ultimately clinched the set 26-24.
Chen Kunlin, the team’s setter, said in a post-match interview that the team felt more relaxed and was able to fully execute their training. Although players come from different schools, team cohesion has been strong. He noted, however, that limited training time means they rely heavily on verbal communication during and after games to build chemistry.
Making his international debut, Chen expressed excitement and nervousness, hoping to gain more experience and learn to make optimal decisions under high pressure. 'These are essential nutrients for my future volleyball career,' he said.
