(Central News Agency reporter Yang Sui-rui, Tainan, 14th) — The coastal areas along Anping Canal in Tainan frequently experience seawater backflow and 'sunny-day flooding' during annual spring tides. As part of the city government's Anping Canal Flood Prevention Improvement Project, no road flooding was observed this morning along Anping Road adjacent to the canal during the current high-tide period.
The Tainan City Water Resources Bureau told CNA that Mayor Huang Wei-che has actively promoted the 'Anping Canal Flood Prevention Improvement Project' to systematically eliminate the phenomenon of sunny-day flooding along the canal during astronomical high tides. This year's peak tidal period, lasting until the 16th, marks the annual spring tide season along southern Taiwan's coast. During the morning hours, no water accumulation occurred on the affected roads, allowing vehicles to pass normally.
The bureau explained that the improvement project received approximately NT$50 million in funding from the central government and adopts a dual strategy of 'blocking external water and draining internal water.' To prevent seawater intrusion, 19 flap valves have been installed at drainage outlets along the canal. These one-way valves use hydraulic mechanisms to automatically and effectively block seawater from flowing back into urban roads during high tide. Additionally, three pumping stations and nine pumps have been planned and installed at low-lying hotspots prone to water accumulation, enabling rapid drainage of internal runoff.
The Water Resources Bureau emphasized that through this flood resilience project, the city has fully transitioned from temporary sandbag-based emergency measures to permanent, automated protective infrastructure.
