(CNA, Seoul, 14th –综合外电) As Typhoon Bavi approaches, Pyongyang authorities today issued warnings for heavy rain and strong winds. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un urged maintaining the 'highest alert' to prevent disaster situations.
According to AFP, natural disasters often have an especially severe impact on North Korea due to inadequate local infrastructure and a weak economy.
North Korea's state-run media 'Rodong Sinmun' reported that Typhoon Bavi is expected to turn into a low-pressure system between today and tomorrow, passing through the central region of North Korea via the Yellow Sea.
The report stated that North Korea's meteorological agency has already issued heavy rain and strong wind warnings.
Quoting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the report said: 'All officials and staff are strongly advised to maintain the highest alert and take measures to minimize disaster damage.'
Rodong Sinmun reported that parts of the northern and central regions are expected to accumulate 80 to 120 millimeters of rainfall today, with localized hourly rainfall reaching 30 to 60 millimeters.
Other areas, including the south, are expected to receive 150 to 200 millimeters of rainfall. Strong winds of 10 to 15 meters per second are expected along the western coast and some inland areas. (Intern translator: Qiu Weizhen / Reviewer: Liu Shuqin) 1150714
