(CNA, Washington, 13th –综合外电) Prominent Republican figure Lindsey Graham has passed away suddenly, and his vacant U.S. Senate seat will now be filled by his sister. Hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed the move, South Carolina’s governor officially appointed her today to complete her brother’s remaining term.

According to AFP, 71-year-old Graham died unexpectedly over the weekend. His sister, Darline Graham Nordone, will now assume his seat in the U.S. Senate, serving until the term ends in January next year.

Announcing the appointment, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said it was “an honor” to have Graham’s sister step in and carry on her brother’s unfinished work.

Nordone said, “He always supported me; now it’s my turn to support him.” She added, “My brother was the best man, an outstanding leader, and a true gentleman.”

Graham was a foreign policy hawk and a close ally of Trump. Earlier, Trump had recommended Nordone to succeed Graham, posting on Truth Social that the appointment would be “the greatest tribute” to Graham.

Nordone’s appointment is temporary. South Carolina Republicans will hold a special primary election on August 11 to select a candidate for the November midterm elections. The winner of the midterms will begin a full six-year U.S. Senate term in January next year. (Intern translator: Chiu Wei-chen / Editor: Tsai Chia-min) 1150714
