A meaningful book donation and reading event was held yesterday at GRAACC, a children's cancer hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, supported jointly by the Taiwanese diaspora charity 'Amor Se Doa' and the Brazilian media conglomerate GMG. The initiative aims to bring smiles and hope to children undergoing treatment through literature and companionship.
During the event, Hiram Baroli, CEO of GMG Group, personally donated 100 copies of his children's literary work 'Viagem ao Planeta Poin Poin' (Journey to the Poin Poin Planet), accompanied by symbolic blue balls representing imagination, encouraging children to embark on a magical journey through words.
Baroli, who also oversees the 'Gazeta de S.Paulo' and 'Diário do Litoral', emphasized that literature provides emotional strength to young patients, and that reading is not only companionship but also part of the healing process.
Dr. Chi Huang Hsiu-li, founder and International Executive Director of 'Amor Se Doa', led a team of medical clown volunteers composed of doctors and nurses, participating alongside local Brazilian volunteers. She stated that children undergoing treatment find comfort through reading and play, which represents the most delicate form of care, bringing warmth to both children and their families.
The core of the event was reading. Volunteers read aloud from 'Viagem ao Planeta Poin Poin' and guided children in interactive games using the blue balls as symbols of an 'Imagination Planet.' Parents expressed that such literary and artistic activities allow their children to temporarily forget their pain and find relief from the stress of treatment, offering immense support to families.
Dr. Chi told reporters that this is not a one-time visit, but a long-term commitment. The collaboration between the Taiwanese diaspora and local Brazilian organizations demonstrates the power of cross-cultural charitable cooperation through literature, art, and volunteer companionship. She said, 'The children laughed and played happily with the clowns. The clowns told stories. This is a lasting action, born from the most delicate care of the heart.'
Brazilian media highlighted that GMG's book donation not only provides reading resources but also symbolizes the shared responsibility of businesses and society to care for the vulnerable. Through international collaboration, the compassion of the Taiwanese diaspora and the creative work of a Brazilian media executive and author converge in hospital rooms, bringing hope to children and their families.
