2026 World Cup Key News
Central Report
(Central News Agency, Atlanta, USA, 15th – comprehensive international news) England captain Harry Kane expressed profound disappointment after his team was overturned in the dying moments of today’s World Cup semifinal by Argentina, who scored two late goals. Kane said that although England took the lead, their attempt to protect the advantage ultimately proved insufficient to secure victory.
According to Reuters, England took the lead through Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute goal, but then faced a fierce Argentine counterattack. Enzo Fernandez equalized, and Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal in stoppage time.
Since winning the World Cup in 1966, England has not reached the final. This England national team, led by head coach Thomas Tuchel, came within one step of the final, only to suffer heartbreak once again.
Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Kane said: "We played very well for most of the game. Once we went 1-0 up, it felt like we just wanted to protect the scoreline."
However, he added: "At this level, that’s simply not enough. It’s really heartbreaking, very disappointing, because we’ve worked so hard to get here. The players gave everything—running, sweat, blood, tears, everything."
He continued: "After scoring, I’m not sure if it was because they committed more players forward or because we couldn’t keep up one-on-one, but they kept coming in waves, and we were just throwing our bodies in front of shots, trying to hold on… but in the end, it wasn’t enough."
Kane said: "The players are always ready to respond to any situation in the game. When we took the lead, our message was to keep attacking and go for another goal… but after they scored two, we tried to regain control, yet we couldn’t reestablish our rhythm."
He added: "We’ve had many great moments in this World Cup, played some fantastic matches, and reached the semifinals once again. We’ve always said we’re knocking on the door of success—we’re so close. We’re just one crucial step away, and we still need to find that missing piece for victory."
Kane also said: "I’m truly heartbroken for all my teammates, for the entire team, the coaching staff, and the fans." (Translation: Hsu Jui-cheng) 1150716
