(Central News Agency, Washington, July 14) — The 96th Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game took place today in Philadelphia, where American League (AL) starting pitcher Dylan Cease struck out three batters in the first inning, sparking a commanding pitching performance by the AL that culminated in a 4-0 shutout victory over the National League (NL).
According to AFP, 38-year-old Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman and 31-year-old American right-hander Bryan Baker combined to record the final three outs in the ninth inning, sealing an almost flawless pitching display by the AL.
Cody Bellinger, the AL outfielder named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game, said: "As the game progressed, our pitching staff completely dominated the opposition."
This marks the first shutout in the All-Star Game since 2013. The AL used a total of 11 pitchers, allowing only three hits and two walks while recording 15 strikeouts.
The AL has now won 11 of the last 13 All-Star Games, extending their all-time series lead to 49 wins, 45 losses, and 2 ties.
AL batters struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning off NL starter Cristopher Sanchez. Yordan Alvarez delivered a hit, Shea Langeliers and Bobby Witt Jr. drew walks, Cody Bellinger followed with a two-RBI single up the middle, and his New York Yankees teammate Ben Rice added an RBI single.
Miguel Vargas, a 26-year-old Cuban third baseman for the Chicago White Sox, hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 4-0, which became the final score.
Cease struck out three in the first inning, and relievers Parker Messick and Michael Wacha continued to suppress the NL lineup, combining for no hits and six strikeouts over the first three innings. The NL’s first hit did not come until the fourth inning, when Juan Soto broke through.
Thereafter, AL relievers Joe Ryan, Nick Martinez, Cade Smith, Drew Rasmussen, and Jacob Ratz took turns on the mound, maintaining a lockdown on the NL offense. Through seven innings, the NL managed only one hit.
The NL recorded their second hit in the eighth inning via Pete Crow-Armstrong, but AL pitcher Louis Varland pitched a scoreless inning, setting the stage for the ninth-inning closers.
Several star players, including Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, missed this year’s All-Star Game due to injuries. (Translation: Hsu Jui-cheng) 1150715
