Key News from the 2026 World Cup

According to a report from Central News Agency in Atlanta on the 15th, England was defeated in the World Cup semifinals. Jude Bellingham, visibly heartbroken, slowly walked across the pitch, applauding fans in appreciation. Moments later, cameras captured him slapping the back of the head of Argentina's substitute player, Valentín Barco.

UK's Metro and The Sun reported that England initially took a 1-0 lead but was overturned by Argentina, missing the chance to face Spain in the final.

Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute, giving Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions an early lead. However, the second half saw a dramatic shift: Enzo Fernandez equalized for Argentina, and Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal in the 2nd minute of stoppage time, securing a 2-1 comeback victory for Argentina.

The match, held in Atlanta, was highly charged, with 26 fouls recorded. After the final whistle, tensions erupted. Bellingham clashed with Argentina's unused substitute, Barco.

As Barco approached to hug winning goal-scorer Martinez in celebration, Bellingham walked over and slapped the 21-year-old's head from behind.

Barco reacted angrily, prompting Argentina midfielder Nico Paz to intervene and pull them apart. Nicolas Otamendi then rushed in and shoved Bellingham in the chest.

England forward Ollie Watkins quickly stepped in and pulled Bellingham away from the scene, defusing the situation.

England will now return to Miami to face France in the third-place playoff, scheduled for 5:00 AM Taipei time on the 19th. (Compiled by Chen Yu-Ting) 1150716
