California Bizarre Insurance Fraud Case: 3 Sentenced After Humans Posing as Bears Damaged Luxury Cars and Were Exposed

The Associated Press reported that the California Department of Insurance named this case 'Operation Bear Claw.'

According to a press release issued by the department on the 16th, two men and one woman from the Los Angeles area pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud charges, and all three were sentenced to weekend jail (i.e., a weekend incarceration program) and probation.

Two of the three were ordered to pay over $50,000 in restitution, and a fourth suspect is scheduled to appear in court in September.

The Department of Insurance stated that the fraud group was accused of providing insurance companies with multiple videos filmed in the San Bernardino Mountains, showing a 'bear' active inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as part of their damage claim application.

Photos provided by the Department of Insurance showed suspected scratches on the vehicle seats and doors.

The Department of Insurance noted that a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, after reviewing the video content, stated that it was 'clearly a human in a bear costume' committing the act.
