Special News on African Swine Fever
(CNA, Taipei, 22nd) Taisugar Corporation celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Chairman Wu Ming-chang stated today that Taisugar bears the responsibility of stabilizing domestic pork prices. Thirteen modern pig farms are expected to be fully completed by the end of the year, with a future market supply of 500,000 heads. Overseas operators from Singapore and Japan have already visited for inspections, and exports are expected to expand starting next year.
Taiwan was restored as an African Swine Fever (ASF) self-declared non-endemic zone in April this year, making it the only country in Asia free from the "three major swine diseases": Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and ASF.
In an interview today, Wu Ming-chang said this means Taiwan's pork can be exported and Taisugar is ready. As Taisugar turns 80, the 13 modern farms will be completed by year-end. By 2030, the market supply will reach over 500,000 heads, which will be used for market price adjustment and exports. He emphasized that Taisugar's priority remains stabilizing domestic prices.
Regarding exports, Wu revealed plans to enter Singapore and Japan next year. Taisugar executives added that Japan, Singapore, and South Korea have conducted inspections and are awaiting formal orders. While original export plans were around 200,000 heads, the volume will be adjusted based on domestic demand.
To commemorate its 80th anniversary, Taisugar has collaborated with Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Co. to launch "Safe Pork Kaoliang Sausage" and partnered with Sunmai to develop "Taisugar Amber Honey Craft Beer," both of which are now on sale.
Additionally, Taisugar introduced upgraded "Safe Pork Braised Pig Knuckles" and Guatemalan specialty coffee. Wu stated that Taisugar has been purchasing coffee beans from small farmers in Guatemala since 2023 to stabilize their income, with proceeds funding local schools. Taisugar also participated in the 2025 Cup of Excellence in Guatemala, bringing the 10th-place winning beans to Taiwan. (Editor: Chang Liang-chih) 1150422
