'Breaking Ground' Exhibition Returns from US to Taiwan, Highlighting Indigenous Art Activism

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMOFA) and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) in the United States co-organized the exhibition 'Breaking Ground: Art and Activism in Indigenous Taiwan,' which has returned to Taiwan. The exhibition features 10 groups of Taiwanese Indigenous artists and was displayed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from August 2023 to January 2024. Curator Nakaw Putun stated at the opening ceremony that the exhibition seeks to re-interpret Indigenous identity and engage in a dialogue with the world through art. Curator Lai Chun-chieh noted the importance of learning from international Indigenous communities' responses to oppression. Artist Chang En-man emphasized the significance of the exchange in Santa Fe, which involved murals and direct interaction with the local community. Deputy Minister of Culture Hsu Yi-chun praised the collaboration under the 'Kuroshio Project,' noting the exhibition's success in showcasing the critical and creative power of Taiwan's Indigenous art.
