WASHINGTON (CNA) — US President Donald Trump was evacuated tonight from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner held in Washington following reports of gunshots. Trump and several officials were rushed from the scene. He later posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: 'Washington D.C. experienced a restless night. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job; their actions were swift and heroic. The gunman has been captured.' He added that he had initially suggested the event proceed, but ultimately followed the guidance of law enforcement. 'They will make a decision soon,' he wrote. Subsequently, Trump confirmed that law enforcement requested an evacuation and he would comply immediately, planning a press conference at the White House briefing room 30 minutes later. Trump also noted that First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and all cabinet members are safe. He spoke with the event representatives and plans to reschedule the event within 30 days. This marks the first time Trump has attended the WHCA dinner as President.
