(Central News Agency reporter Wen Kui-hsiang, Taipei, 12th) President Lai Ching-te today met with Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon and stated that Wyoming University has signed scientific research MOUs and cooperation intent letters with National Central University, National Atomic Energy Council, and Industrial Technology Research Institute, deepening cooperation in advanced technologies and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). He hopes to combine Taiwan's and Wyoming's advantages in low-carbon technology and critical minerals to jointly promote net-zero transition, technological innovation, and build more resilient democratic supply chains.
President Lai Ching-te met with Governor Gordon (also transliterated as Gordon) and his delegation this morning, accompanied by National Security Council Secretary-General Wu Chao-hsieh and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. This is Gordon's second visit to Taiwan, following his first visit in April last year, demonstrating his high regard for Taiwan and representing the continuous deepening of the partnership between Taiwan and Wyoming.
The President specifically thanked Governor Gordon for strongly supporting exchanges between Wyoming and Taiwan since taking office in 2019, fostering good cooperative relations in agriculture, education, and other fields. At the same time, many Taiwanese students have gone to Wyoming for studies, continuously deepening the connection between talent and culture.
The President stated that in recent years, both sides have expanded new cooperation opportunities in economy and trade, energy, and technology. For example, last year, the Wyoming Energy Authority and the 'Taiwan Quantum Computer and Information Technology Association' signed a memorandum of cooperation to jointly promote quantum technology development.
He said that Governor Gordon's visit this time saw Wyoming University signing scientific research MOUs and cooperation intent letters with National Central University, National Atomic Energy Council, and Industrial Technology Research Institute, further deepening bilateral cooperation in advanced technologies and carbon capture, utilization, and storage, jointly driving net-zero transition and technological innovation. All these indicate the fruits of their joint efforts.
The President stated that facing the challenges brought by supply chain restructuring and the AI era, energy security and industrial resilience have become important global issues. Wyoming's advantages in critical minerals and low-carbon technologies make it an indispensable partner for Taiwan in its transformation process.
The President expects to continue leveraging the industrial advantages of both sides to deepen cooperation and jointly build more secure and resilient democratic supply chains. In addition, the President said that Taiwan became the fourth largest trading partner of the United States last year. He took this opportunity to thank the Wyoming State Legislature for passing pro-Taiwan resolutions for four consecutive years since 2023, supporting Taiwan's international participation and supporting the negotiation and signing of a 'Bilateral Trade Agreement' between Taiwan and the US.
The President said that this year, Taiwan and the US completed the negotiation and signing of the 'Equivalent Trade Agreement' and 'Investment Memorandum,' and held the 'Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue' meeting, and signed the 'Silicon Prosperity Declaration and Joint Statement on Taiwan-US Economic Security Cooperation.' He hopes that through the signing of a double taxation avoidance agreement, economic and trade cooperation can be further expanded to create a win-win situation.
Finally, the President stated that he believes with the support of the visiting guests, Taiwan and Wyoming will continuously deepen cooperation and jointly contribute more to Taiwan-US relations and global prosperity and development.
Governor Gordon said in his speech that his visit to Taiwan yielded excellent results in discussions about carbon capture and carbon utilization. Now, there is an opportunity to lead the world in carbon capture, utilization, and storage. Through the partnership between Taiwan and Wyoming, the importance of net-zero transition and economic aspects is also highlighted.
He said that the current situation is a very exciting time, facing many opportunities but also many challenges. During this trip, related scientific research memorandums were signed for CCUS, which is carbon capture, utilization, and storage, and small modular reactors (SMRs). These technologies can produce a large amount of energy, which can be invested in the AI revolution and AI applications, which is a very important development now.
He stated that Wyoming is also eager to provide relevant energy, such as natural gas and other energy elements, to help Taiwan's economic development. He also hopes that through economic cooperation between Taiwan and Wyoming in the future, relevant infrastructure can be built in the United States. (Editor: Su Lung-chi) 1150512
