Hualien City is strengthening its vector control measures, with Mayor Wei Jia-yan emphasizing a combined approach of cleaning drainage ditches and disinfection. This initiative comes amid concerns over Hantavirus cases reported in Northern Taiwan. The Hualien City Office conducted disinfection operations in the Guofeng Li drainage system on May 4th. Mayor Wei stated that clearing and disinfecting ditches are fundamental to environmental maintenance, and the city conducts seasonal ditch cleaning projects complemented by environmental disinfection to systematically enhance vector control. He urged the public to avoid areas where disinfection is underway and to maintain their home environments by clearing standing water and debris to reduce mosquito breeding. The cleaning team also addressed concerns about rats, noting that while a national rat extermination week is no longer held, the team focuses on pest control at waste and kitchen waste sites. They advised residents to prevent rats from entering homes, keep living spaces tidy, and store food securely.
