New Taipei City Government announced today that it has enhanced environmental cleanup and disinfection in 3,964 key areas to prevent rodent infestations. A second city-wide disinfection operation commenced on May 8th and is expected to be completed by the end of May, aiming to curb the expansion of rodent problems and infectious disease risks.
Chen Run-chiu, Director-General of the New Taipei City Department of Health, stated at a city government meeting today that as of May 12th, the national confirmed cases of Hantavirus remained at 2, with one case each in Taipei City and New Taipei City, and the epidemic has not escalated. The Department of Health is promoting the "Three Nos for Rodent Prevention" concept through various channels, including Facebook, LINE groups, neighborhood broadcast systems, and the official website. These principles are "Do not let rats come, do not let rats live, do not let rats eat." The department is also strengthening public health promotion in conjunction with food hygiene inspections.
Cheng Ta-wei, Director-General of the Department of Environmental Protection, reported at the meeting that areas prone to water accumulation, vacant lots and houses, construction sites, markets, night markets, and concentrated vendor areas are designated as key prevention zones. Currently, 3,964 locations are under management, with ongoing efforts to clear silt from side ditches, remove messy spots, maintain park environments, and encourage market vendors to conduct self-cleaning and disinfection.
Cheng Ta-wei added that a meeting of the "Environmental Sanitation Promotion Platform" was held today to review the rodent control plans and execution progress reported by various responsible agencies, and to promote community participation in environmental improvement. Currently, enhanced prevention and inspection operations are underway across various locations, resulting in 87 citations after inspections. The second city-wide disinfection operation began on May 8th and is expected to be fully completed by the end of May.
Furthermore, the Department of Environmental Protection will hold its first "Practical Training on Environmental Management and Rodent Control" on May 20th. Following the concept of "community mosquito control specialists" during the dengue fever epidemic, this training will require participation from the responsible units of each venue and cleaning personnel to strengthen frontline prevention capabilities.
