The Taiwanese Association of Greater Vancouver, established in 1966, marks its 60th anniversary as Canada's longest-standing Taiwanese community organization. Originally founded to connect fellow provincials and foster Taiwanese identity, it served as a vital support network, especially during Taiwan's White Terror period when overseas organizations were blacklisted. Members actively discussed Taiwan's political reforms and international standing, organized fundraising for democratic movements, and provided practical assistance to new immigrants. During peak immigration waves in the 1990s, the association's role in helping newcomers settle grew significantly. In the 21st century, its activities expanded to include large-scale events like Taiwan Day picnics and 228 commemoration concerts, as well as participation in international advocacy and local charity work. The association is currently preparing a special publication and documentary to commemorate its history and the contributions of its members.
