Acting Prosecutor-General Hsu Hsi-hsiang: Appointed to Maintain Extraordinary Appeal Mechanism

Taipei, May 19 (CNA) Acting Prosecutor-General Hsu Hsi-hsiang said today that he was appointed to this position because the Supreme Prosecutors Office's extraordinary appeal mechanism cannot be suspended, and thus he is acting under orders. Former Prosecutor-General Hsing Tai-chao's term expired on May 7. President Lai Ching-te nominated Hsu Hsi-hsiang as Prosecutor-General on March 13, but the Legislative Yuan rejected the nomination on May 5. Subsequently, the President designated Hsu Hsi-hsiang as Acting Prosecutor-General, effective May 8, to exercise relevant powers. Hsu Hsi-hsiang attended a press conference this morning on the Coast Guard Administration's success in cracking down on cross-border drug trafficking at the airport. After the conference, media asked him about the controversy surrounding his acting appointment. He stated that regarding the acting position, he was assigned to perform this duty. The Supreme Prosecutors Office has a very important function, which is that the extraordinary appeal mechanism cannot stop, so he is acting under orders to fulfill this role.
