Gunman Kills 8, Injures 5 at Busy Egypt Transport Hub; Suspect Shot Dead

(CNA Cairo, 19th, Comprehensive Foreign Report) Egyptian authorities stated that a gunman carried out a shooting in the southern Assiut province yesterday, killing 8 people and injuring 5 before being shot dead by security forces. According to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP), citing the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, the shooting occurred in the Abanoub area, where the suspect opened fire from a car towards a bustling transport hub. Authorities said a preliminary investigation found that the attacker had previously received treatment at a psychiatric hospital in the capital, Cairo, but they did not state a motive for the attack. After the shooting was reported, security forces immediately rushed to the scene, but the suspect fled to nearby farmland. Police tracked and surrounded the area. The Ministry of Interior stated that a gunfight broke out when the suspect noticed the approaching security forces, during which he was killed. Videos circulating on social media showed large crowds gathering as ambulances arrived at the scene. One clip reportedly shows a man, believed to be the suspect, dressed in a traditional Egyptian galabeya and holding a rifle, standing next to an SUV.
