(CNA, London, 19th) The winner of the prestigious International Booker Prize, a major annual event in the English-speaking literary world, was announced in London this evening. The award went to the novel 'The Taiwan Travelogue,' written by Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-tzu and translated into English by Chin Ling. This is the first time a Taiwanese literary work has won the International Booker Prize, marking a historic moment for both Taiwanese literature and the prize itself. Previously, the only Taiwanese author to be longlisted for the Booker Prize was Wu Ming-yi in 2018 for his work 'The Stolen Bicycle'. The International Booker Prize recognizes works of fiction translated into English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. The prize money is shared equally between the author and the translator to highlight the importance of translation. Including 'The Taiwan Travelogue', the 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist comprised six works, with original languages including Chinese, Bulgarian, French, German, and Portuguese. 'The Taiwan Travelogue' was published in the UK by the independent publisher And Other Stories and went on sale in March this year.
